Catholicgauze Wants His Own, Too

The University of Minnesota - Minneapolis, long known for having Marxist geography and other departments, is considering giving Al Gore an honary Ph.D. in climatology. Catholicgauze is currently wondering what he has to do for one.

A good first step might be: Invent the internet.

Or be the Vice President.

This might be obvious to everyone else, but what is Marxist geography?

Catholicgauze said...

Marxist Geography is studying geography through a Marxist point-of-view. Constantly mentioning the "oppressed" and saying how bad the US is.

How does one become "known for having Marxist geography and other departments?" Is their a gossip mill reserved particularly for geographers where this type of thing is discussed?

There is a gossip mill. Wisconsin-Madison and Minnesota are probably the two universities in America with openly Marxist departments.

Thank you for the intel... a question though. For example, Mike Davis is a Marxist but appears to still be a gifted and interesting writer, if you can ignore the bias in places. Am I right to guess this is a rarity among geographers/climatologists/historians or?

Actually incredible we're still talking about Marxists in 2007 but Marxists worldwide are still going strong in places like India and Italy.

David Harvey, founder of Marxist Geography, did some enjoyable works early on which were actually free of political bias but has since gone off the deep end. Most Marxists works in geography are unreadable due to their bias.

Coming Anarchy did a piece a while back on how a few Marxist die-hards still exist and what this can signify with Islamic militancy.
