Geography Quiz 1

I have decided to add a new feature to the blog: Geographic Travels Geography Quizzes.  I will attempt to give greater depth to geography by offering more than just "what is the capital of x" questions.  Answers will be posted sometime the next day in the comments section.  Feel free to post your guess.

First Question:  The facilities below are along North Korea's East China Sea coast.  There are smaller ones of these in South Korea.

They make me think of salt pans.

And the answer is............................................. Salterns! Gary and gS49 are right. The Koreans use this ancient method to gather in sea water and in turn allow the water to evaporate while the salt gathers on the bottom. The western coast of Korea is much more practical for salterns due to its many bays while the eastern shore is directly exposed to the Sea of Japan.

North Korea uses its massive salterns to supply it salt. South Korea's salterns are much more for historical/cultural purposes.
