Personally I wish that Daylight Saving Time would disappear and we'd stick with standard time throughout the year. It's a semiannual ritual seemingly based more on tradition than fact. One recent study conducted as a result of Indiana's adoption of DST universally in 2006 concluded that DST may actually increase residential electricity demand: http://www.nber.org/papers/w14429
The only possible benefit I see is that it reminds us to change the batteries in smoke detectors twice a year.
Hey 12, I never understood the whole political battle over DST. I thought about writing about the geopolitics of DST (maybe next time we spring forward) but worried about the comment flame war. ;)
It's kind of like the debate over circumcision, I don't get it.
I think it would be a great article CG! The paper that 12 refers to looks fascinating. I think it's incredibly hard to measure how energy-efficient DST is and was surprised when it was tacked on to the Energy Policy Act. I personally think it would be better to have year-round DST. Thanks for the link!
